The day after

We’d love to have you join us the day after the wedding for a BBQ at Yabiana’s dad’s farm. It is a working coffee farm about 600m above San Gil.

We will provide further details soon.

Where to stay

Hotel Piedra de Moller

The reception venue is also a boutique hotel. It is approximately a 30 minute drive from San Gil and a 10 minute drive from Barichara. There will be limited rooms available on the wedding night. Please let us know if you are interested. We will likely give preference to guests travelling with children and older guests.

San Gil

San Gil is Yabiana’s hometown and we encourage guests to arrive a day or two before the wedding so that we can arrange a pre-wedding dinner and welcome you to San Gil before our big day.

San Gil is a popular destination for Colombian holidaymakers and backpackers (due to the range of outdoor/extreme activities on offer). As a result, there is a decent amount of accommodation to choose from to suit different budgets and needs. Many of the hotels have family friendly options (especially those out of the city centre).

Our favourite is:

🏨Hotel Campestre Casona del Camino Real: It is basic but the staff are lovely, the traditional Colombian breakfast is a winner and there is a swimming pool and a very cute dog. It is a short taxi ride to the centre of San Gil (a few $AUD).

Other places we have stayed are:

🏨Hotel Trip Monkey Del Rio: A little more modern and comfortable than Camino Real but it does not have quite the same charm or a dog (and the breakfast isn’t as good). It does have a swimming pool. A 10-15 minute walk to the centre of San Gil. A few decent restaurants underneath the hotel which is very handy.

🏨Hotel Boutique el Campana Rio: A comfortable hotel in the centre of San Gil. Opposite the main church and 20 metres from Parque Principal (the town square). A great location.

🏨This is Colombia Hostel: San Gil gets busy over the Christmas period and we aren’t always the best at booking in advance, so we ended up at this hostel a few years ago. It is well located within the city centre and was clean and comfortable. Family rooms with private bathrooms are available.

Barichara

Barichara is often referred to as the most beautiful town in Colombia and for good reason.

It is a very popular tourist destination and the accommodation tends to be more upmarket than San Gil (and likely to offer a few more creature comforts).

It is a 35 minute drive from San Gil and only 5-10 minute drive from the reception venue.

We have not previously stayed in Barichara so we do not have any specific recommendations.

Getting to San Gil

From Bogotá

✈️ Flight to Bucaramanga: Daily flights available from Bogota. From Bucaramanga, San Gil is a 3-hour drive by bus ($10AUD) or Uber/private car ($150 to 250AUD). The drive from Bucaramanga to San Gil winds through the Andes with sweeping views of Chicamocha Canyon. One of the great drives.

✈️ Flight to San Gil (Los Pozos Airport): Very limited flights available - this is not something we have ever done. The airport in San Gil only re-opened recently and flights are sporadic (and possibly only available by charter).

🚍 Bus from Bogotá to San Gil: Approximately 8-12 hours usually with a lunch/dinner stop ($30AUD). An experience.

🚗Private car from Bogotá to San Gil: Approximately 6-8 hours depending the number of stops ($275-500AUD).

Via Villa de Leyva: An alternative option is to break up the trip from Bogotá to San Gil with a night or two in beautifully preserved town of Villa de Leyva.

From Medellin

✈️ Flight to Bucaramanga: Refer to information above in the ‘From Bogota’ section.

✈️ Flight to San Gil (Los Pozos Airport): Reportedly there will soon be a direct flight Medellin to San Gil operated by Satena.

How to get around

San Gil:

🚶Walk: The easiest way (and often the quickest way) to get around the city centre is to walk

🚕Taxi: For slightly longer trips (for example, if you are staying a little out of town), taxi is your best bet. You can ask your hotel to arrange a taxi for you, call the local number if you hablas español or flag one down on the street.

🚍Bus: Although we most typically take taxis, you can use the bus to visit the small towns surrounding San Gil.

Larger cities (Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, Santa Marta):

🚶Walk: Be sensible and aware of your personal security. Reconsider walking through unknown or quiet areas at night.

🚗Uber: We predominantly use Uber or Didi when possible. The ‘Comfort’ option will give you a more comfortable ride.

🚕Taxi: We suggest you only take taxis arranged by your hotel or ordered directly with the relevant taxi company using WhatsApp.
